On March 4-th and 5-th, 2026, in Budapest (Hungary), events dedicated to navigation conditions on the Danube basin were held at the premises of the Danube Commission: - Joint Workshop on Waterway Management of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region/PA1a and the Danube Commission; - Experts Meeting of the Danube Commission on the parameters of shipping traffic and ensuring navigation conditions on inland waterways. Representatives of the Ministry of Development, the Shipping Administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Enterprise " Ukraine Sea Ports Authority", and the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company participated in the events in an online format. The State Enterprise "UKRVODSHLIAH" was represented by the head of the River information service department, Captain Illya Tykhonov. These events addressed a wide range of issues related to the safety of navigation on European inland waterways, navigational and hydrological conditions, in particular: - The state of fairways on the Danube River in 2025 and measures to improve their resilience; - Information on the dimensions of fairways, hydrotechnical and other structures on waterways, changes in the fairway due to hydrological conditions; - Analytics of emergency events with ships on the Danube due to changes in water levels and sediments, in critical locations and due to adverse weather conditions; - Informing about emergency events with ships for timely response and assistance; - Display of actual information on electronic navigational charts for inland navigation and timely updating of electronic charts; - Correct installation of navigational aids; - Organization and implementation of dredging works, information about the places and procedure for their works, dissemination of works on the creation of deep-water channels of sufficient width to reduce dependence on shallowing; - Proposals for ensuring reliable safe navigation in variable hydrological conditions. Special attention was paid to the issues regarding the awareness of vessels about navigation conditions and dangers to navigation, in particular during sudden changes in water level. For this, the key role is played by river information services, through which navigation information is directly transmitted. The participants of the events identified that the issues discussed were critically important for Danube navigation. The information which will discussed on these events, will be used during the practical implementation of the “UkrRIS-Danube” Project.
